Why You Have To Set Clear Boundaries To Be Healthy
Recently I was talking with a fellow coach about the importance of setting boundaries in order to make self-care and health-care a priority. I shared with her how I’ve found setting boundaries with my work and relationships with friends and family one of the most difficult parts of being an entrepreneur.
Now, you don’t have to tell me that taking care of myself is important and I make it a daily priority, but as a recovering people pleaser this is an area of growth for me. And I see it in the lives of my clients on a regular basis.
Maybe you need to set boundaries with your work hours, how often you socialize with friends or how long you allow yourself to dwell on the past- whatever it is, your health and well-being is dependent on your ability to clearly communicate with yourself and others about what you do and don’t need.
Recently, I’ve needed to set boundaries with myself in all of these areas. The result? Well, I now turn off my computer at 7 pm each night and shut off my phone (well, most days…) and I’ve had to make some tough decisions about when I do and do not socialize or hang out with friends and family in order to take care of myself.
To help you on your journey with boundary setting, Here are a few tips to consider:
- Check in regularly with yourself about what is and is not working- in your work life, relationships, family. It all affects your health.
- Communicate your needs openly and authentically with everyone involved.
- Don’t take the reactions of others personally.
- Stay focused on your vision and your goals.
- Be kind to yourself and others (the golden rule).
As you start to set boundaries with yourself and others, some resistance may come up. You may find yourself getting stuck in the mode of trying to please everyone or worried about what others are thinking of you. If so, I get it. Check out this youtube video where I teach you a technique to help you during these times of worry and stress.
Remember that change doesn’t happen over night and setting boundaries, especially in relationships, is difficult for everyone. This is something you will work on daily and you’ll get better with time. All areas of life affect your physical, mental and emotional health. If you can stay clear about your needs and communicate them to others in a kind, compassionate, yet direct way, you’ll be on your way to living the authentic and balanced life that you desire.
